The Pocket Sales Manager and Desktop Sales Manager have file level compatibility. This means that any file produced on one can be read and processed on the other. The intended use of the Pocket Sales Manager for the professional salesperson who has both products, is that at the beginning of the day, the Pocket Sales Manager would be loaded with the current Pipeline for the salesperson to take on their calls. Changes would be made throughout the day as calls are made, and the Pocket Sales Manager would then contain the most up-to-date Pipeline information. At the end of the day, the information on the PSM would then be moved back to the DSM.
This release of the Sales Manager products provides record level synchronization between devices. What does this mean to the user?
It means that you can now have more than one person making changes/additions to a single pipeline at the same time, and within certain conditions, those changes will be preserved when the two pipelines are merged back together. Take the example where a salesperson is on the road, making changes to their opportunities as they visit each customer. Meanwhile, back at corporate, their assistant is adding new Opportunities to the copy of the Pipeline file on their PC in the office. On returning from the sales visits, the salesperson can them merge the Pipeline from the Pocket PC into the one on the Desktop PC and not lose either the changes they made, nor that additions made by their assistant.
The Pocket PC should be connected to a desktop or laptop PC using the 'cradle' provided by the Pocket PC manufacturer, and the ActiveSync product from Microsoft will establish a link between the two devices.
The synchronization of the records is essentially a 'pull' process that must be initiated from the Desktop Sales Manager. A complete description of this Combine/Merge process is provided in the User Manual for the Desktop Sales Manager.
