There is a large number of different icons that can appear to the left hand side of an Opportunity when it is displayed in the Pipeline display window. We tried to make them intuitive (yeah, right!), but for those less-than-obvious ones, here is an explanation of each of the little beggars!
A normal Opportunity when the Pipeline is sorted in Opportunity Description Sequence
A 'WON' Opportunity when the Pipeline is sorted in Opportunity Description Sequence
A 'LOST' Opportunity when the Pipeline is sorted in Opportunity Description Sequence
An Opportunity which is neither Won, nor Lost, but which is past its due date.
A Watched, normal Opportunity
A Watched, and 'WON' Opportunity
A Watched, and 'LOST' Opportunity
A Watched Opportunity which is neither Won, nor Lost, but which is over its due date.

When sequenced by a Sales Analysis category, this is a group icon for all 'Worst' rated Opportunities
When sequenced by a Sales Analysis category, this is a group icon for all 'Very Negative' rated Opportunities
When sequenced by a Sales Analysis category, this is a group icon for all 'Worst' rated Opportunities

Indicates a Group level within an Opportunity
Indicates an Open Group level within an Opportunity
Indicates a regular data field within an Opportunity
Indicates a selected, regular data field within an Opportunity
Indicates that the Journal entry for this Opportunity contains some text entry
Indicates that the Journal entry for this Opportunity contains no text entry
When sequenced by anything other than Opportunity Description, Sales Analysis or Status, this is used to indicate a category level.
Either the Revenue or the Weighted Revenue for an Opportunity
Indicates the Opportunity Due Date field
Indicates the Opportunity Due Date field when an Opportunity is past the due date
