Each sales opportunity tracks its sales owner - the sales professional who is responsible for the sales opportunity. In most cases the sales owner information is handled automatically. You may see the sales owner information as pipeline Category group, listed in the pipeline window, or as a property of an individual sales opportunity.
Be sure you have set your user information with the TOOLS -> OPTIONS menu.
New Opportunities
When you create a new sales opportunity, your user name is inserted into the sales opportunity as the sales owner.
Editing Sales Opportunities
When you edit a sales opportunity, your user name is inserted into the sales opportunity as the sales owner. Your user name is NOT inserted as the sales owner if you have unchecked the option box "Make me the sales owner of any item that I edit" in Tools (tab) --> Options --> User (tab).
Combining Pipelines
When combining sales opportunities, an option is offered to make you the sales owner of the new opportunities.
