Advanced techniques for selecting contacts
Previous  Top  Next

Combining selection techniques is an powerful way to target groups of contacts inside a list. This is best illustrated with an example. Let us assume we have a list of contacts from throughout the world. We wish to identify new contacts that are located in Germany.

Our strategy to accomplish this:
1.Identify contacts that have the status Unknown - they are our new contacts.
2.Among the Unknowns, identify the ones in Germany.

Here are the specific steps:
1. Identify contacts that have the status Unknown
·Select by status: Uncheck every status except Unknown and then press Select in the Select by Status area. All the contacts with the status Unknown are now highlighted.
·Select Show in the Display area. This result is that the only contacts listed are those that were selected - in other words, only the contacts that have the status Unknown are now listed.

2. Among the Unknowns, identify the ones in Germany

·Click on the Country column header in the list area to sort the contacts by Country.
·Use the mouse to select the first contact in Germany and them hold the shift key and select the last contact in Germany with the mouse. Now all the Contacts from Germany are selected.
·Select Show in the Display area. The results is only the selected contacts are visible in the list - in other words only the contacts from Germany are displayed.

For further control over tartgeted groups of contacts you may choose to cut or copy these contacts from the "main" pipeline file and paste them into a new pipeline file while you work on them. When you are done with them they can be cut/pasted or merged into the original pipeline file.
